Socially experimenting
I have a confession to make. I am a full-blown reality TV addict (cue feigned sympathy and a "Hi Megan").
You name it, I've watched it. Survivor, Laguna Beach, Newport Harbour, The Hills, Average Joe, Joe Millionaire (yes, there is a difference), Keeping up with the Kardashians, Living Lohan, America's Next Top Model, Big Brother, Project Runway and my personal favourite, The Bachelor.
Another favourite of mine is Beauty and the Geek. If you have not been fortunate enough to catch a couple episodes (you really only need a couple), it prides itself on being a "social experiment". Basically, beautiful bimbos are paired with socially impaired geeks who more often than not, hold records for solving Rubik's cubes. The idea is that living under one roof and completing challenges will help them in the areas they lack.
I may not have a particularly high IQ or a degree in Polymer Sciences but I have come up with my own theory. First year is a social experiment. That, or it feels a lot like one. You have the freedom to make mistakes and then laugh about them. To take subjects you then realise don’t interest you. You party to your heart’s content until you head tells you to go home (often well after Friar’s closing time) and you pull all nighters to hand in essays on stuff you don’t quite understand. But it’s the experience that’s so worthwhile.
So if this was a social experiment, here is my conclusion. Firstly, your hypothesis is always wrong. Except for the inevitable growing up part. Personally though, I’ve realised that it’s okay to care too much about people’s lives. That’s what journalism is about, and its what I want to do with my life. A career in law is the last thing I want and if it meant taking Legal Theory 1 to teach me that then it was a worthwhile mistake. Living with people who couldn’t be more different to you teaches you to embrace your differences because you aren’t right and they aren’t wrong. My friends are no longer from one clique. I’m a news reader and music presenter on Rhodes Music Radio! Rhodes affords you with ample opportunities to change and develop. I actually just sent in my application to become a section assistant in spinning – and this is the same girl who was terrible at hockey. The same girl, but somehow changed.
