To my dearest Dee

To my dearest Dee

As you are going into your first year at Rhodes I think it’s only best that I, your older more mature self should give you a few tips on how to survive this year.

O week is an awesome experience and you shouldn’t be too scared to interact with as many people as you can because in that week you may just meet the people that will be your friends for life. Don’t be fake towards anyone because in the end you will only be fooling yourself. Go to as many introductory lectures that you possibly can because if you don’t you will have doubts as to what subjects you want to take and will end up taking subjects that you absolutely despise ( sociology is definitely a no go area!).

When the time comes to start learning for exams you should try and set up a time table and not fall into the trap of wanting to sleep all the time. By the way, the time to start learning is not the day before!! You will fall short and it really is not worth it! When the time comes for you to get your results back make sure you don’t tell Dad if you failed any subjects because he will not understand and he will freak out. Rather resort to telling Mom because she is a good friend of yours and she will understand. Ultimately Megan and Robyn will be the most understanding. If you do fail, do not give up because you will soon see that you can actually do well if you just apply yourself.

And lastly I would like to give you my most important piece of advice as it will help you get through every single day. Don’t take your friends for granted because they are the rock in your life and they will never judge you or disown you for anything you do. Make sure you keep them with you for as long as possible (forever is the best option). And always remember that friends forgive each other and if they are your real friends you shouldn’t feel the need to fight for their friendship. They will be there all the time for you.

Good luck for your university experience and try to stay focused at all times and never ever give up on yourself you have got the strength to go far.

Lots of love
Your older more mature self, Dee

Hey Dee

from the very first sentence i felt that i could really understand where you are coming from. i thought exams would be a breeze, i must admit i was a little big headed coming into this year because i never really worked hard during high school but was happy with my marks. i messed around with lecture attendance and really had to deal with the consequences during the June exams. although i didnt fail anyhing i came pretty close to failing one of my favourite subjects, english. this opened my eyes and made me realise that if i wanted to acheive academically, it would take work. i really enjoyed reading your blog because i felt that i could really relate especially to the friendship sphere. my friends have helped me through so much this year, without them i dont know where i would be. thanks for letting me know that im not the only one who has had to fall before getting up.

lots of hugs
Cim
